not strictly necessary and logic is trickier to implement now that backend is killed on purpose. Would need to distinguish between desired vs. undesired deaths

takes too long (~200ms), causes very slight delay in response
to fix "Error: Unable to find Node version '12.x' for platform darwin and architecture arm64."
don't think these are needed anymore? don't see them in extension examples
